Challah run for the vulnerable and in Lockdown during the coronavirus pandemic
The welcoming of Shabbat is a cornerstone of Jewish identity and religious belief. Observing Shabbat is a Mitzvah that many families across the world are keen to observe.
The recent coronavirus crisis has left many unable to find the traditional elements of the Kabbalat Shabbat ceremony, especially the challah, that delicious and beautiful bread that we break together in celebration.
We think it’s most important that we continue welcoming Shabbat as a community. As a community we stand strong and can better support each other in these difficult, and for some, lonely times. Given the almost non-existence of bakeries or supermarkets selling challah in SE London (London Bridge, Canada Water, Rotherhithe, Bermondsey, and nearby areas) at the best of times and now even less so with so many recent closures of bakeries, we are running an initiative of supplying a small challah to those wanting to welcome Shabbat in a traditional way.
The challah would be delivered either Thursday afternoon or Friday morning to your door at no cost. Our plan is to set up a group with a rabbi leading the Shabbat prayers so that we can all remotely log in and hear or say the Shabbat blessings together, and break bread “together”.
Do let us know ASAP if you are interested or know someone interested in receiving a challah free of charge. Quantities are limited, so please get in touch soon.
For those who want to bake their own challah, please find our step by step-by-step guide here: Challah Bread recipe
We look forward very much to hearing from you.
